Reprinted with Permission by Louis Harmony, who tells how this wonderful event came to be in her words:

"This is my grandson's effort to help pass on dog safety!

When asked by his school for a "how to" project ,he came up with this one.  Photos are by my daughter, my husband. or me.

He also had hand-outs for kids to bring home as well.

When Brad was walking Tears, the dog hesitated.  His mother reminded him to walk like Cesar!!!  When up came the shoulders and confidence,

Tears walked beautifully for him.

Both dogs have learned manners with Cesar's help! My grandchildren use body language to see when a dog is calm/submissive and the older ones remind the younger ones to only pet the dogs when they are calm/submissive."

  • MANY DOGS ARE NOT USED TO CHILDREN

  •  AND MANY KIDS ARE NOT USED TO DOGS.

  •  NOT ALL DOGS ACT LIKE THE ONES YOU KNOW.

  • CAUTION IS NEEDED WHEN MEETING  A NEW DOG.
 2.  THE MAIN RULES IN MEETING A DOG ARE:

meetingdog.jpg

 * ASK THE OWNER IF YOU CAN PAT THE DOG.

 * DO NOT WALK TOWARDS THE DOG, LET THE DOG COME TO YOU TO SAY HI, INSTEAD  OF
 WALKING TOWARDS HIM.

HE'LL BE MORE RELAXED IF YOU LET HIM INTRODUCE
 HIMSELF.

 * STAND STILL!
* DO NOT TALK,
*DO NOT TOUCH
 * DO NOT EVEN LOOK AT DOG.

THIS TELLS THE DOG THAT YOU ARE NOT OUT TO HURT HIM.

 * STAND LIKE A POST. DON'T PUT YOUR HAND OUT,
LET THE DOG SMELL YOU.

REMEMBER HE WILL NOT REALLY GET TO KNOW YOU
 UNTIL HE CAN SMELL YOU.

IF THE DOG HAS EARS UP, TAIL UP OR TAIL IN-BETWEEN ITS LEGS, JUMPING UP, BARKING OR GROWLING:

--STAND STILL AND DO NOT MOVE OR LOOK AT THE DOG!  IT IS NOT A SAFE TIME TO PAT THE DOG.

3.  WAIT TILL THE DOG IS COMFORTABLE AND CALM.  THE DOG WILL LOWER HIS  HEAD  AND HAVE EARS THAT FOLD BACK LIKE IN THE PICTURE OF ME AND TEARS.

earsback.jpg

IF THE DOG BACKS AWAY OR BARKS,

YOU SHOULD NOT GO
TOWARDS THE DOG.

 STAND STILL AND
DO NOT LOOK AT THE DOG.

DO NOT PAT A DOG YOU DO NOT KNOW ON HIS BACK.

 WHEN THE DOG IS CALM,
 THE SAFEST PLACE
 TO PAT THE DOG,
 IS ON HIS CHEST.

You may however have to work at it! Richard Bach
